Atmospheric Encounters (with Landscape)

These sixteen Polaroid photographs were taken over the course of a year in the Cairngorms National Park. Each reflects an encounter with landscapes undergoing restoration work. These encounters were shared experiences between me and the landscape. Polaroid film, highly sensitive to light and temperature, was co-developed with the landscape, imprinting not only an image, but also the weather conditions of the day. Cold, rainy days yielded bluer tones, while warm, sunny days produced yellows. Exposed to the atmosphere, the photographs also became etched with debris from the encounter (mud, water marks, cracks). These images tell the story of one year of atmospheric encounters with the landscape.

Alongside the photographs, outdoor gear is displayed as a blurring of  the research site in the Cairngorms and the research site of my desk. Drips, dirt, and debris have etched themselves onto this gear, keeping encounters with landscape alive. In this way, it is a way of noticing a relational exchange with landscape.
